Dehumanization of an Innocent Child

Imagine living in a place where stacks of dead bodies lay everywhere, snow becomes bolshy from the flowing blood, and people cry hysterically because of devastation. Elie’s losing conviction epitomizes the nonentity of God in that concentration camp. Furthermore, Elie does not bear time to pray since he arrived and this causes him to lose his relationship with God.



When the daytime of Atonement, Yom Kippur, arrives, Elie refuses to fast in order to survive: “I did not fast…there was no longer each precedent for me to fast. I no longer accepted God’s silence” (p.69). Elie prefers to abide the reality and survive rather than look at in an invisible existence that does not provide any benefits. Eventually, Elie feels less burdened considering he does not need to pray, sing, or fast anymore. Changes are flourishing in the concentration camps, as Elie also begins to change his feeling towards his companions.
