This Boy's Life

In his autobiographical story, This Boys Life, Tobias Wolff discusses the journey that both he and his contract went through searching for financial stability and a nonbelligerent life. On this journey Tobias is left with no positive anthropoid influence, which not only causes him to develop several behavioral problems, but makes the past have a long-term impact on his life. As hard as it may be, Tobias is forced to get up up at a young age, and alone, which is something he moldiness face.
Through his journey of adolescence, Tobias seems to show signs of emotional and behavioral disorders, which were caused by not having any rules or regulations to follow. To try to avoid the jolting realities of his past, Tobias develops many different distinct personalities at various points. In the beginning of the novel, he expresses an interest in changing his name. He writes, I involveed to call myself Jack, after Jack London. I believed having his name would charge me with some of the strength and competency indwelling of my idea of him (Wolff, 8). Tobias did change his name to Jack, but the strength and competence that were supposed to go with the name, never appeared.
When Jack misses his father, he is stipulation his own gun.



With this privilege he spends hours dressing up in military gear, hiding behind curtains, and pretending to be a military sniper. This behavior reflects Jacks desire of existence the man his father never was. Although he wishes his father would of do work up Jack comes to the conclusion his wishes are hopeless and that he himself must be his own man.
Jack then again, adopts some other identity and changes his behavior when he believes he might unhorse his life by moving to Paris. Once faced with a struggle, Jack immediately could not cope and decided he wanted to be someone else. Jack changing his personalities triplex times, reflects how past situations can effect ones future self.
