In Latin America and Caribbean Views - For autochthonic plenty in Latin America, land rights are only half the battle, it talks about how indigenous people are struggling to regain the land they originally lost during the Spanish Conquest and through political battles with the governing bodys. During the 1980s, many disposals in Latin America where giving back to the indigenous people by ease uping reserves for them to reside. The main issue with the reserves is the fact that the government still maintains control over the land. Local ethnic music leadership do not confine a say in whether or not they can develop the land or have alternative uses for the land. Originally, the tribal leaders were supposed to have a democratic vote with other political members on future developments of the land. The government has taken the democratic power of the tribal leaders out of the equation by allowing companies to move into the tribes lands. A reserve for these tribes was originally designed to upkeep companies and government developments off of this land. This defeats the purpose of establishing a reserve for these indigenous tribes. The tribes are fed up with the unfair policies in function that prevent them from officially owning their land.



But is modern government the ones to dedicate the blame on for this inequality.
In the article, LATIN AMERICA: The Rights of internal People Living in Nature Reserves by Marcela Valente, she talks about how the military dictatorships in the 1970s created the policies and laws regarding the purportedly uninhabited lands that made up the agrarian parts of the country. During these times, befitting census of the population was not in place and the government believed that these lands had very few people in them and decided to establish the land as a national park. In youthful times, it is now confirmed that at least 86% of the rural land is inhabited. This changes how the government should classify this land.
